Over 2 million people took the diabetes drug Actos, a medication that the FDA now warns may cause cancer of the bladder. As if diabetes wasn’t a serious enough disease, thousands with it have now discovered they are also going to have to fight bladder cancer. The company that made Actos, however, has made billions from it. Actos bladder cancer cases are now being diagnosed much more rapidly thanks to actions taken by the French and German drug regulatory bodies. This past summer Actos was removed from the market in France and the German agency requested doctors not prescribe Actos to any new patients, both because of Actos bladder cancer concerns. The FDA, typically slow to react, has issued two notices about Actos bladder cancer risks in the last year, but Actos is still being used in the United States at the present time.
